Why is the fish one of the oldest symbols of Christianity?
The fish is one of the oldest and most widely used symbols among Christians. But do you know why? The fish has several meanings related to the Christian faith. The first is that the Greek letters that form the word fish, ichthys, are the initials of a confession of faith: “Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter”, which means Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. This acrostic was a way for Christians to memorize and express their belief in Jesus.

This is an acronym, used by early Christians, for the expression “Iēsous Christos Theou Yios Sōtēr”, which means “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior” (in ancient Greek, Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ ͑Υιός, Σωτήρ). It was one of the first Christian symbols, along with the crucifix, and continues to be used by Christian churches.
The second meaning is that the fish was a secret code for Christians to identify themselves and gather during times of Roman persecution. Christians would draw a fish in the sand or on walls to mark the places where they met to pray and celebrate the Eucharist. If someone suspected something, the fish wouldn’t attract attention, as it was a common symbol in pagan culture. But if another Christian saw the fish, they knew that there were brothers and sisters in Christ there.

The third meaning is that the fish relates to several biblical passages that speak of the life and mission of Jesus. For example, Jesus multiplied loaves and fishes to feed the hungry crowd (Matthew 14:15-21). Jesus called some fishermen to be his disciples and said that they would be fishers of men (Matthew 4:18-22). The resurrected Jesus appeared to his disciples by the sea and ate fish with them (John 21:1-14).
Therefore, the fish is a symbol rich in meaning for Christians. It reminds us of who Jesus is, how he nourishes us with his word and his body, and how he calls us to be his followers and witnesses in the world. The fish is a sign of Christian identity, communion, and mission.
